Nearly all of us are on at least one social media channel. It’s no different for nursing professionals. And from time to time, we hear in the news about someone fired from their job for something they posted about on social media. Sometimes it’s related to their job. Sometimes not.
Knowing what you shouldn’t post on social media is essential for a nurse. The last thing you want is potentially losing your job over a post.
Can Social Media Get Me in Trouble with the BRN?
In a statement on Facebook directly, the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) says, “The BRN reminds RNs that disclosing patient information on internet social media is a violation of HIPPA and the Nursing Practice Act.” They also say that any patient information obtained during treatment must be safeguarded.
Nurses have an ethical obligation to maintain patient privacy that is backed by law. The BRN will investigate and can fine nurses or file Accusations against nurses who violate patient privacy. Fines for disclosing patient information can amount from $2,500 up to $5,000. Accusations can result in the revocation of your nursing license.
What NOT To Post
Nursing World says it best when they say, “Best practices are merely a high-tech version of old-school manners, from avoiding heavy self-promotion to maintaining a respectable presence on a social platform.” We couldn’t agree more. So here are some things NOT to post because they could get you in trouble with your employer or the BRN.
- Do Not Post Anything Mean About Your Patients – First, you may come across as judgmental. You are not only representing yourself but also your employer.
- Do Not Post Anything That Violates Your Company’s Social Media Policy – Nearly all workplaces have social media policies. Make sure you know your workplace policy. When in doubt, don’t post it.
- Do Not Post False Information – During the Covid-19 pandemic, social media became the go-to tool for spreading information, but it can also be used to spread misinformation. Make sure anything you post regarding medical advice is approved by your company.
What To Do If You Get Caught Posting Something You Shouldn’t
If you’ve been caught posting something you shouldn’t, especially if it violates HIPPA and the Nurse Practice Act, you should get legal help immediately. You are facing severe fines or an Accusation from the BRN and could potentially lose your job and your license.
